Stone rooms
Summer school (in English)
from Monday 8 to Friday 12 July 2024
supervised by
Duncan Lewis, architect
Cyrille Thomaidis, geologist
Marc Martinez, prehistorian
From the 18th century onwards, Marcamps stone has been the wealth and renown of the Gironde. Indeed, some of the finest facades in Bordeaux and the surrounding region were built using this hard, non-gelling stone, whose size (33 x 66 cm) is aptly named ‘Marcamps’.
Offered by arc en rêve to international architecture and landscape students, the Stone Rooms summer school will be based around a series of workshops in the former quarries of Prignac-et-Marcamps. Over the course of 5 days, students will be able to work immersively in situ, under the guidance of experts from a range of disciplines, focusing on the notions of scale and the relationship between elements. Ad hoc and ephemeral interventions will enable participants to invent a new imagination and write a new narrative for this little-known underground heritage.
The summer school is open to all architecture and landscape students
