Trees have occupied a prominent place throughout the history of architecture.
On the one hand, for centuries, they have been one of the predominant sources of building materials. On the other, living trees have been a recurrent theme in design history: planted and nurtured in gardens, parks and urban spaces; used to amplify perceptual and sensorial effects in residences, offices and public buildings; protected in preexisting projects and incorporated into new ones, entering into dialogue with the intentions of architects, planners and landscape architects.
Their current use in design and planning corresponds to novel social and political agendas.

arboretum presents a selection of projects and ideas from various areas and different locations, highlighting how trees can be architectural components and how they have been the object of architects’ speculation.
The tree is architecture and architecture is a tree.
