In 2021, arc en rêve presented Arboretum, trees as architecture, an exhibition that explored how architecture might engage more directly with trees—not just as raw materials or decorative elements, but as active agents in shaping the built environment. This project formed the starting point for a design workshop led in 2025 by Professor Patrick Evans at the UQAM School of Design in Montreal, on the other side of the Atlantic.
The Arboretum Workshop brought together 19 students graduating in environmental design. They were invited to explore the relationship between architecture and trees through research, analysis and speculative design. A central question led this project: How can architecture move beyond conventional ecological gestures to establish deeper, more meaningful connections with living systems?
The course began with a series of analytical models, or “dissections,” each focused on a precedent project in which trees and buildings coexist. Some of these precedents were drawn directly from the original arc en rêve exhibition, while others explored local precedents from Montreal and Quebec. All 18 models were constructed using wood from a single pine tree felled on Montreal’s South Shore. The choice of pine—Montreal’s official tree, recently added to the city’s flag—emphasized both ecological symbolism and material specificity.
In the second half of the semester, students worked in teams to develop proposals based on a specific site or tree in Montreal. In this case, the tree was no longer simply a backdrop but became an active collaborator capable of influencing program and form. Each group explored, at different scales, the spatial relationships between natural and built systems. The eight final projects reflect a wide variety of approaches and sensibilities. Together, they illustrate a rich variety of strategies for reimagining the coexistence of trees and architecture in urban environments. Echoing themes from the original arc en rêve exhibition, these projects position trees not as decoration or raw material, but as active players in the urban fabric.
All of the work produced by the Arboretum Workshop / Trees and Built Environments, UQAM School of Design, Winter 2025, was featured in a public exhibition and a publication available on the N360 Northern Design website.
